Crowns

A crown, also known as a ‘cap,’ is a protective layer that encases a tooth surface, helping to restore it to its normal shape and size. As dentists, we will use a crown in cases where fillings or other types of restorative options are not suitable or available.

While there are many specific types of dental crowns, tooth-coloured crowns made from porcelain are the most popular choice today. Made to match the shape, colour and size of your other teeth, crowns are extremely durable and can last for many years, if not a lifetime.
We almost always recommend a crown in cases where a tooth has undergone a root canal, or where large fillings now exist. Decayed or fractured teeth; or teeth that require cosmetic enhancements are also good candidates for crowns.

Getting a crown will typically require 2 appointments. Your first visit may require preparation, such as removing decay and shaping the tooth to accept a new crown. We will then take an impression of all of your teeth, upper and lower. The impressions are sent to a dental laboratory where the crown is fabricated and sent back to us. During the second appointment, we remove the temporary crown and cement the final restorative piece into its permanent position. Talk to us today to find out if a crown is right for you.

Bridges

Dental bridges are most commonly used in cases where there is a gap (a missing tooth) between teeth. Made of durable materials, such as metal and porcelain, a bridge is an excellent way to introduce a fixed (non-removable) appliance to replace any missing teeth.

The most popular and traditional bridges typically utilize construction of two crowns on abutment or anchoring teeth that help fill a gap created by a previously removed tooth. Reasons we may recommend a bridge include:

  • Upgrading from a partial denture
  • Filling space of missing teeth, preventing other long term concerns
  • Maintaining your facial shape and preventing sagging muscle tissue
  • Restoration of your smile
  • Improvement of your chewing and speaking abilities

Dental bridges usually require two or more visits to our clinic. While your teeth are numb, two anchoring teeth are prepared by removing a portion of enamel (typically 1-2mm), allowing for a crown. We then take a highly accurate impression and send it to a dental laboratory where the new bridge is fabricated. In addition to this, a temporary bridge will be made and worn until you return for your next appointment. Your final bridge will be carefully checked during your second appointment, where we will adjust and cement it to achieve a perfect fit.
