Root Canal Therapy
When a tooth has been significantly damaged, either through trauma or long-term untreated decay, the nerve of your tooth can become damaged and begin to cause you pain. In these cases, the nerve area can usually be cleaned out and filled. The practice is known as a ‘root canal’. The term ‘root canal’ can conjure up negative feelings since, in the past, the procedure was known to be unpleasant and painful. With today’s advanced technology, root canals are really nothing to be afraid of.
The procedure involves numbing a tooth initially with a local anesthetic, followed by cleaning and disinfecting of the entire hollow chamber inside the tooth (did you know your teeth are hollow?). A root canal is complete when we place a gutta percha to seal the inside of the canal and prevent any additional bacteria from entering the inside of the tooth. It is very common that root canals are completed in a single appointment, allowing our patients to keep their teeth for decades.
Here are typical symptoms where a root canal may be required:
- Severe, long-lasting toothaches
- Sensitivity to hot temperatures on your tooth
- Tooth pain from cold, even after cold is removed (lingering or worsening for 60+ seconds)
- Pain that causes you to wake up from sleep
- Pain that is not relieved by over the counter pain medications such as Advil
- Constant throbbing
- Swelling
- Pain from pressure such as biting or chewing
If you are experiencing one or more of these symptoms, please contact us for more information.
