What it is

The first few visits are about familiarity.

A young child does not need a thorough clinical exam so much as they need the room to become ordinary. Chair goes up and down, the light is bright, the little mirror is cold. Get that out of the way early and the appointments that matter later are much easier.

  1. Meet the roomChair, light, mirror, no instruments. A minute well spent.
  2. Count and lookA gentle exam of teeth and gums. X-rays only where there is a reason, not by default and not by age.
  3. Polish and fluoride where usefulQuick, and most children find it more interesting than unpleasant.
  4. You hear what we sawAnything worth watching, explained to you and to them, without loading the words.

Cost and coverage

You should never be surprised by a bill.

Every plan arrives with the fee beside each line and the insurance estimate beside that, before you agree to anything. We submit to your plan directly where it allows it, and we are set up for the Canadian Dental Care Plan.

Fees for this are quoted in writing after an exam, per tooth and per surface. Nobody can price it accurately from a website or over the phone.

How old should they be for a first checkup?
From the first tooth is a reasonable rule. Earlier visits are short and are mostly about getting comfortable, which is exactly the point.
Do children need x-rays at every visit?
No. X-rays are taken where they would change what we do, which for many children is not often. We will explain the reason each time rather than treat it as routine.
Can I stay in the room?
Yes. Most young children do better with you there. As they get older some prefer to go in alone, and that is worth allowing when they ask.

If it is pain, say that -- it changes how the day gets arranged. If it is a checkup for three people, say that too and we will try to put you in one morning.
