What it is

Custom-made beats boil-and-bite.

A guard made from an impression of your own teeth fits closely, stays put, and spreads force the way it is supposed to. A drugstore guard is better than nothing for occasional use, but it is bulkier, it moves, and people tend to stop wearing it, which makes it worth nothing at all.

What the visit is like

How one gets made.

  1. We work out what we are protecting againstGrinding at night and impact in sport call for different thicknesses and different coverage. Occasionally jaw pain is not grinding at all and a guard is the wrong answer.
  2. Impressions or a scanA few minutes, no freezing. This is what makes the fit worth paying for.
  3. Made and fittedYou come back to have it fitted and adjusted so it does not rock or rub. Wear it, then tell us if anything is catching.
  4. Checked at your next visitBring it to checkups. Guards wear through, and a worn one tells us something about how hard you are grinding.

Cost and coverage

You should never be surprised by a bill.

Every plan arrives with the fee beside each line and the insurance estimate beside that, before you agree to anything. We submit to your plan directly where it allows it, and we are set up for the Canadian Dental Care Plan.

Fees for this are quoted in writing after an exam, per tooth and per surface. Nobody can price it accurately from a website or over the phone.

How long does a night guard last?
It depends entirely on how hard you grind. Some people wear through one in a year, others go several. Bring it to your checkups and we will tell you when it is due rather than guess in advance.
Will a night guard stop my jaw pain?
Sometimes it helps a lot, sometimes it does not, because jaw pain has more than one cause. We would rather say that up front than fit an appliance for a problem it does not address.
Does my child need a sports guard for every sport?
For contact sport yes, and most leagues require one. For non-contact it matters less. If they are in braces tell us, because that changes what gets made.
