What it is
What the levels actually feel like.
Freezing on its own removes sensation but leaves you fully alert. Oral sedation is a tablet before the appointment that leaves you drowsy and detached but able to respond, and most people remember little of it. IV sedation is deeper and adjusted through the appointment. None of these are a general anaesthetic and you are never unconscious.
- You have avoided dentists for years because of anxiety
- You have a strong gag reflex
- Freezing has not worked well for you before
- The appointment is long and sitting still is the hard part
- A previous dental experience went badly
- Several treatments could be combined into one visit
What the visit is like
How a sedation appointment is arranged.
- A conversation before anything is bookedYour medical history, your medications, and what specifically is hard about dental visits. That last one changes which option makes sense.
- We pick the lightest thing that worksDeeper is not better. If freezing plus going slowly is enough, that is what we do.
- Written instructions beforehandWhat to eat and when to stop, which medications to take as normal, and who is driving you home. Someone must.
- Monitored throughout, and followed upYou are monitored for the whole appointment and someone checks in afterwards.
Cost and coverage
You should never be surprised by a bill.
Every plan arrives with the fee beside each line and the insurance estimate beside that, before you agree to anything. We submit to your plan directly where it allows it, and we are set up for the Canadian Dental Care Plan.
Fees for this are quoted in writing after an exam, per tooth and per surface. Nobody can price it accurately from a website or over the phone.
Common questions
Asked on the phone most weeks.
Will I be unconscious?
Can I drive myself home?
Is sedation safe if I take other medications?
Booking
Say what it is when you call.
If it is pain, say that -- it changes how the day gets arranged. If it is a checkup for three people, say that too and we will try to put you in one morning.
